The cracked glass over the camera module usually requires a whole phone replacement as well. In addition, the iPhone X had a replacement cost of $550 if you break the rear glass. I think the XS has the same screen and phone replacement costs, but the XS Max is a bit higher at $329 (display) / $599 (rear glass/replacement)

Considering the discrepancies in glass shattering from the various tests I have seen on the new iPhones I can confidently say that the manufacturing process for hardened glass has a differing variance of strength from sample to sample

You've come waaaaay too comfortable with drop testing phones. Shivers are sent up my spine every time a phone hits the ground.

CONCLUSION: On paper - just like oftentimes with the processor - it might definitely be more durable. However, in practice it's still all about getting lucky with the dropping angle, surface and height.

It keeps getting super exciting to see drop tests from you.

The way the glass makes contact and the shock dispersed play more of a role in these kinds of tests. There is no way to test this reliably. That being said, I am somewhat impressed with how these held up. Given the angle you hold your phone is very rarely exactly face down or back down, the chances are good that the phone will take some kind of side impact. From the tests I have seen here and elsewhere, it seems that it can take side impact well.

For the back impact, i guess the camera saved the back glass. There might be some cracks that can't be seen with the naked eye after a few drops and eventually shatter easily and become worse for the following drops, it's glass after all, it shatters when cracks appear. It may gives a different result if you test every drops and heights with a new set instead of trying with the same phone over and over again.

I wonder how well they would fare on a non-smooth surface, like a sidewalk. Driveway, or most other places people are likely to drop them when getting out of cars, pulling it out of a pocket to answer etc. Good video - well shot.

This is pretty good to be honest, like the guy said it’s just the way it’s dropped flat and the shockwave which caused it to break. Side drops seem to hold up well.

I’m gonna buy the iPhone XS Max this week. Can’t wait, but I’m definitely buying a case even though I never drop my phones. Picking out a case is half the fun of having a nice phone anyways lol

No matter how durable phones get, it's always painful to watch things fall. Especially if they cost $1500

For what I saw, if the phone hits the sides first then the damage is reduced to nothing, but if it hits the screen is over. The frame is impressive.

You should clean the floor with a sticky roller first, Im guessing its point impact that kills it on the face down / up test so is just a bit random depending what actually contacts the screen. Very watchable as always.

this gives me anxiety lmao but it's nice to know its fairly durable as long as its a simple, short fall. I'm upgrading from a 6 Plus and I've had it for four years and shattered the glass twice. (I was super stressed at work so wasn't paying attention both times.) but anyways, I bet it's going to be a major upgrade for me and I'm excited to get my XS Max in!!

Great test thanks I always use a case but great to see the test, it’s something you can never do yourself.

When I had my XS, I dropped it once from 10-12 feet face down and nothing happened to it. It fell on to straight concrete. I was so scared to see the damage and there was absolutely no damage. Crazy.

I've often wondered if they could distribute the weight and add some extra metal to have it so, when the device drops, it is more likely to land on its edge.

Overall it looks like these phones are very well built and the glass is in fact very durable. You also have to keep in mind they didn’t crack until after a few drops. Who is going to repeatedly drop their phone like that in real life? Great job, Apple!

What cases would you recommend? Bought the Symmetry Otterbox but its quite bulky. Though after seeing how easy the screen cracked, I might keep it. :)

the glass is now even more expensive to repaplce, over $500 for the WS and $599 for the XS max. insane. You could do with a drop test bench to get consistent drops. ive dropped iPhones a bunch of times and the only time i got a crack was from a foot up falling out of my pocket and it had a toughened glass screen protector and a rubber bumper, but it caught on a tiny amount of exposed glass and cracked it. You’ve given it some really tough drops though from up on a ladder, ouch

I suggest the Max because you usually have a case. And usually the front screen is more prone to damage

The speakers are incredible on my new iPhone Xs I’m very impressed by them compared to my 7+ it was worth the upgrade.

I think doing a drop test on gravel or a sidewalk would be much more realistic as we're often using them on the go and have higher chances of falling then.

Mines the opposite lol the glass has held up much better than the sides. The sides have tons of micro scratches and stuff that are pretty noticeable.

Even if you repair the glass other internal could have taken some damage in the drop. Ive seen microphones, cameras etc brake several weeks after a drop. A case is the best :)

Heyy bro it also depends on the surface u are dropping on concrete has very high rigidity that's why the impact is totally rebounded if it's on wooden surface or bitumen road the results are gonna be different.

Both phones seem good and durable. Nobody’s going to drop a phone 10ft on cement floor and they will most likely have some type of case if not a screen protector. The most responsible fall was waist high and as we seen didn’t cause much damage.

I have the leather case on my XS and I dropped it face first on tile turning a light off. It survived without a scratch and I’ve never felt more relieved 😂 I’ve had an iPhone since the 5s and that was the first time I really dropped my phone like that.

The first 2 drops hurt my heart. Just watching them both hit the direct corner of the phone. AHHHHH

What you should do is a drop test switching the iPhone from different heights, cuz once you’ve dropped the same phone a couple times, then yea it’s gonna crack.

Honestly I think the Xs broke because it had previously hit the sandpaper. That likely caused scratches that were weak points on the glass

People do know that drop tests aren't a very scientific way of determining how likely it is your phone will break on a drop right? It's 90% luck. You could drop it from 10 feet and be ok or 2 feet and have it break. Small variances in the ground, glass of the phone, and impact location make all the difference.

They only break when you drop them accidentally 😂

The conclusion? Apple should use the glass used in XS for the back, and the XS Max on for the front. 😂

I’m sure it’s because the cracks on the back allowed the energy to escape, passed right through the front screen and through the back.

🧐🤔IMO It seems that they become weaker with each drop and so they become more prone to cracking with each subsequent future drop. It’s like the first accidental drop is a warning...saying “you better be careful or a case”. 😂

Honestly I've dropped my iPhone 6s SO MANY TIMES! it usually didn't have a case that was too protective and it didn't crack once! (Still amazed at the durability)

They both got their own drop specialties 😂

But you can replace the glass on the back... I’m planning on doing it, just place it on a hot plate with all hardware removed and heat it very hot, using gloves and a knife, start picking away at the glass backing. Leave the camera till last. This just clean it up, apply adhesive and stick a new screen and camera lens on.
