Didn't see an explanation while scrolling a little, so here's a quick Google search explanation from thehill: Two Olympians matched their opponents' mark at nearly 7 feet, 8 inches (2.34m) in the high jump finals in Tokyo - both will take home a gold medal. Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim and Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi decided to split the honor after each failed to make it over the bar.- which could have led to a jump off. The pair missed the 7-feet, 10-inch (2.39m) mark three times after clearing the bar. Barshim asked an official if it was possible to end the competition in a tie, The Associated Press (AP) reported. The official said it could be, and his fellow competitor and friend agreed to the conclusion. "I still can't believe it happened," Tamberi said, according to The AP. "Sharing with a friend is even more beautiful ... It was just magical."

A bit of backstory, the Italian, Tamberi, suffered an ankle injury and missed out on the 2016 olympics and looked like his career was over. Barsham also had suffered an injury that looked to be career threatening knew how hard Tamberi worked to get back to this point. He knew how hard the homie worked and knew he deserved gold as well so decided to he wanted to split the glory. Not many people would share but what these two athletes did was incredible and historic. There’s still hope of humanity in this world. This Is what the olympics are all about. Amazing

They did take the easier way out, as the other one would have resulted in only 1 winner, how it should be.

@festo 888 The point of high jump is to see who can jump the highest. Both of them could only jump a certain height and couldn't clear the new one after trying for quite a while. You think this is Dragon Ball Z where one of them will magically find the power to clear it when they're even more tired? No, it would be a waste of everyone's time. They're at the top regardless. Nobody else except them have reached that height in their event at that moment. They already beat everyone else by clearing the previous height. No dq is necessary here except to fill your ego

I'm talking about the humility these guys to share a first place, they both won why is that is hard to You guys are..... That type of thinking is why you people will never be happy! You are going to die in misery by constantly comparing yourself to others. You know why? Because statistically speaking there is always someone better than you at literally everything you can ever do so in your logic you are a loser! When you win the lottery it's still called winning. Wtf are you better than everyone else at? We celebrate athletes as winners because they have archived great things in comparison to other athletes! You may never be in that olympic podium, but if your goal is to lose weight, and you wake up, excess, lose 100 pounds you then you have won! If you learn another language you have won, if you beat cancer you have won, if you change somebody life in a positive way, you have won! So stop thinking like a loser be a better person. Trophies are nice and should be celebrated, that's not what my quote was about!

That actually means little. Having an Olympic Gold medal worths MUCH MORE than the timing itself. Especially 'Now', in this era, where 'status' and 'brands' mean more than 'hard work'. Once they reach back home, they'll be celebrated like national heroes, and when they retire they can easily open a Sports school and start collecting school fees.

I actually saw it when it happen during the Olympics. It was such a touching moment. The italian guy cried so much. He was celebrating by himself for a while. And the guy from Qatar had a flag and was celebrating. Then someone far up in the crowd came down and gave the italian guy a flag. They both pushed each other higher and higher during that long jump championship. And i was happy when they didn't even reply to the guy talking they just hugged and celebrating once they knew they both had gold. Because if they had decided to do a jump off they both knew one of them wasn't going home with gold. So they decided to make history and shared the gold. I was very and still i am happy for them. Brothers for life, great sportsmanship. God bless u both.

The scene is the final of men's high jump at the Tokyo Olympics. Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi was facing Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim in the final. Both of them jumped 2.37 meters and were on par ! Olympic officials gave three more attempts to each of them, but they were unable to reach more than 2.37 meters. One more attempt was given to two both of them, but Tampberi withdrew from the last attempt due to a serious leg injury. The moment when there was no other opponent in front of Barshim, the moment when he could have easily approached the gold alone ! But Barshim asked the official "if the gold can be shared between the two of us if I withdraw from the final attempt ?" The official checks and confirms and says "yes then the gold will be shared between the two of you". Barshim then had nothing to think about, announces withdrawal from the last attempt. Seeing this, the Italian opponent Tamberi ran and hugged Barshim and screamed ! What we saw there was a great share of love in sports that touches our hearts. It reveals the indescribable sportsmanship that makes religions, colors and borders irrelevant !!!

I've read their stories. Qatar's Essa Barshim and Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi are friends outside the tracks as well. They were rivals in every events. In 2016 Gianmarco had injured his leg and recovered right before 2016 Rio Olympics. Doctors advised him to let his leg rest more and not competing that year. He was so down but Essa came and supported him and joking that the Italian will has 4 years to train. Essa said he will wait for him on the next 2020 Tokyo Olympics(in the video). He even wrote on Gianmarco's leg cast. Gianmarco brought along his cast to that tournament.

Egyptian children or any nationalities don't have right for citizenship or even permanent residence And Egyptian population in Kuwait is bigger than Kuwaiti themselves 😂 arab gulf countries( saudi arabia , qatar , UAE, Kuwait, oman , Bahrain) don't give any citizenship to Expatriates children expect for few number with great benefits such as sport , UAE last two year offer golden card like American green card to Arab celebrities such as Egyptian singers and few number scientists thats it

@Omar Gadal yes that is for people whom are originally not qatari and would want to become qatari, but any child who is born in qatar has the right to become a qatar citizen. if i’m correct it’s in the law itself, shld search it up. barshim was born in doha, hence he is by default a qatari from birth.

I understand your point of being able to recognize the work of the opposition and all of that. I think things like that elevate sports far more than when opponents and fans trash on other teams and people. If you want to see people lifting each other up in sports, you can watch any number of team sports. But there is always a winner, and as a consequence, a loser. Nothing wrong with that. You go at it again next time. Sports is about winning and losing at the end of the day, but life is not.

@Lukas A Notice how you turn into personal intrusiveness. Where and why exactly did you infer it relevant or appropriate to tell me about my empathy, or The Holy Bible? A mere smile cannot describe the entirety of a person's circumstance. Indeed, it embodies joy and love. But does that represent the entirety of that particular human? _(try not to resort to personal remarks)_

    • Lukas A

      Lukas A

      13 күн бұрын

@Niranjan it's no question if it can as per definition a real smile is the pure symbol and embodiment of human joy and happiness. And if you're truly questioning the joy in the one guy screaming and the other crying out of pure happiness, you might wanna work on your empathy. And if you don't want to, you clearly didn't even understand those few core facts the Bible got right which are all about being decent human beings and accepting others

The highest level of competition and yet the highest level of sportsmanship and respect. This is what makes a true champion.

@ericsw03 actually if he made the attempt he’d have won the gold…. The other dude could no longer compete since he injured himself in the middle

@BarryBlu because apparently people can't enjoy two things??? Having an anime pfp doesn't automatically mean I'm a shut in who has no sense my guy

Nah my dude i think this story is very cute but it's not sportsmanship or honour or anything like that. They got the option to get the gold without risking losing and disappointing a friend. I'm not blaming them or anything but that is really not sportsmanship
