The term "Guerilla tactics" wasn't coined until the early 1800s during the Peninsular War in Spain, when the spanish partisans were described as "fighting a small war" or in spanish guerilla... so what would the Sultan actually have said? Fabian tactics?

@The Warrior محارب the attempted conversion of Vlad was mentioned in part one. Who cares about Vlad's brother memorizing the Quran? How is that even relevant or important? These videos were not about his life they were about the battles agaisnt the ottomans.

In fact,to descurage another population to colonise you land, you as a ruller must order to you commanders to do that. If you have a pact with you enemy,to not colonise you land or is war,and you enemy dont respect that pact, that mean, you must put fear in colonisers to not come back

There are quite a few anecdotes about Vlad. He captured some opposing nobles and order them impaled but the nobles supporting him protested because it was a death for commoners, not fitting someone of high status. Vlad conceded and the asked the executioners to use longer sticks for the nobles so they stand above the common criminals when impaled.

I wonder if the members of Monty Python were aware of this legend? In _The Life of Brian_ an orthodox couple protests on realizing there's a Samaritan being crucified nearby, because under the terms of the occupation they're entitled to be crucified in a Jewish-only section. Others start protesting too. The centurion asks for everyone who wants to be crucified in a different section to raise their hands.

He HIMSELF did things 99% of Kings & Princes would never do: - fight his own duels and win - enter an enemy garrison himself dressed as the enemy and open the gates - lead HIMSELF a charge at night into the camp of a huge enemy army with the intent to target the Sultan And also was a Sadist. Say what you want about the guy but he had HUGE BALLS. Most kings in history were in their castles during the wars, some were watching the battle, very few actually fought. This guy was LEADING Commando operations.

Vlad was educated in Ottoman Palace. He tried to make similar night attack as Ottomans did in 1371. Serban Despot Ugljesa marched on Ottoman city Adrionopole with 70.000 soldier. While they made camp near Maritsa river Ottoman General Lala Sahin Pasha realised Serbians were too confident and security of canp was low because main army of Ottomans was in Asia. Lala Sahin Pasha attacked to camp of Serbians at night only with 800 light cavalary. He created big panic in Serbian camp because Serbians didnt realise they outnumbered Turkish attack as 800 to 70.000. Lala Sahşn Pasha directly attack to center of the camp and killed Serbian Nobbles. And Serbian King and his soldiers drowned while they tried to escape by passing other side of the river with panic. Vlad exactly tried same operation, he made night attack to kill Mehmet. But Ottoman Sultans protected by permanent army called Janniseries. And Janniserries elite and well organised units. They had good reaction and hold Vlad's advenced because unlike Serbians Janniseries knew they outnumbered Vlads army. Holding Vlad was makimg time to ley Ottoman sipahi cavalaries join the fight and finish Vlad. Vlad was smart when he lost the surprise advantage he knew he cant stand against Ottoman army and he managef to retrrat. But all success of Vlad is coming from his education in Ottoman army. Vlad's war againsr Mehmed wass more like a civil war of 2 Ottoman cımmanders.

Abel...that was a tactic used by Alexander the Great - to cause chaos among the enemy. Imagine a force that outnumbered the attacked force causing havoc! The invaders were relaxing the night before an attack and the surprise they would get when battle plans didn't go according to the anticipated result.

Great video as usual... I am a big fan already. Vlad could raise eyebrows from Machiavelli, Tamerlane and Richard the Lionheart... The only thing that he could not do was to assure the boyars loyalty. Boyars of Stefan of Moldavia were fiercely loyal to him with minor exceptions and that made the sultan expedition of 1476 end in failure.

Yes. 15th century Moldova knew 2 reigns (Alexander the Good and Stephen the Great) which, combined, lasted for almost 80 years. Less exposed and arguably stronger, with higher stability and less entrenched feuds. Even after Stephen died the dynastic continuity remained mostly unchallenged and would have continued probably longer if it weren't for the breaking point in Romanian history which, imo, is the loss of Bugeac under Petru Rares. His "we shall again be what we were before and even more" motto proved to be rather ominous for centuries and a tremendously costly prophecy to bring into life.

@York's Folly well when you stated common goal of spreading the islam, makes it a bit weird. As Europe itself was in war with themselfs, how about if they had a common goal and didn't fight eachother. You making it sound like as if Europe wasn't in war with eachother. Vlad maybe if he wasn't betrayed or had gained more support could had hurt the ottomans alot. That raid on that camp could had finished the campaign against them if he did had the support of that right flank who knows. There were amazing battlefields back on those side with amazing wins for the ottomans but also for the european counter parts. Alot of amazing stories to bad it contained alot of innocent lives.

Absolutely loved the video! I've been waiting with bated breath for its release, checking your channel multiple times a day. I was so excited when I woke up this morning, went onto KZonlines and saw it there as the first recommended video! Fantastic presentation and details as always! One thing I was hoping for more detail on was when Vlad is forced to retreat to Poenari Fortress (his army mostly melted away) and is attacked by Radu and his forces. As you'd know, the legends go that this is when his wife committed suicide by jumping from the battlements into the Arges River below and Vlad somehow escaped via a secret passage into the mountain, and then rode off on a horse with the shoes nailed on backwards to trick his pursuers. Whether this is true or just legend, I'm not sure, but wondered if you may have uncovered anything more on it, and thought this video would have at least addressed/mentioned it. According to my research, this is when he then escaped into Transylvania and sought out Matthias Corvinus and was captured and imprisoned. Will you possibly be including this in your next video (if you are indeed planning a Part 3 to cover Vlad's time in prison and then his return to the throne and death in 1476)? Any thoughts on the Poenari raid or other reasons it was not included in this video (perhaps not enough factual historical evidence about what actually happened?)?... Again, incredible work, and I look forward to more in the future. Thank you!! :)

The rivalries between Moldovan and Wallachian rulers always were kept at a personal level. The territorial disputes concerned only small border areas (Crăciuna, Chilia). More often than not a pretender was supported in order to have (possibly) a friendly neighbor and eventual battles resumed mostly to the clash of the small professional/mercenary part of the army, there were no invasions to grab territory. Sometimes battles were avoided due to last minute negotiations. The idea to unite the Romanian countries in a de facto alliance and later followed by attempts to create one state was certainly entertained in Vlad's time but, interestingly, it was actively pursued by several Hungarian leaders of Transylvania once Transylvania became mostly independent after Hungary's collapse. Those leaders too considered unification of the 3 political entities as such, not by carving into the neighbor's territory. This kind of unwritten accord maintained a balance which allowed a sometimes tense but viable coexistence. A natural balance, true, due to comparable size and manpower, for instance, but nonetheless remarkable. About the legends on Vlad. Most people don't know history, that's a fact for all countries. National pride embellishes certain historical figures. Various generations are permeated by various approaches of popular history (for instance, pre WW2 and post 1965(roughly) history vulgarizations were nationalistic, post WW2 until 1965 and post 1989 are imperial induced (obedience to USSR or obedience to the west colonial trends). Of course, the nationalist view is closer to the truth, for the simple fact you can't build a narrative over hundreds of years which vastly disregards facts and in the same time maintain a cohesive discourse while colonialist views don't give a damn on (a logical) continuity, on the contrary. But under both influences the Dracula negative, let alone vampiresques, legends never took a hold on Romanians, because they were perceived, without much knowledge of history, I repeat, as dissonant if not utter stupid. You can't sell a native something he instinctively senses as being foul play.

I wrote this text on our Facebook page, maybe it answers your questions: "Myths vs facts: folk tales about Vlad the Impaler The Romanian people outside of the noble class never had, as far as historical evidence has survived, any memory tradition about him. The claim which you might have already heard (see the books of McNally/Florescu) that in some villages there survived tales and legends about him until well into the 19th century is not true. Ethnologists like Petre Ispirescu („Poveşti despre Vlad Vodă Ţepeş“) or Constantin Rădulescu-Codin („Legende“) who collected these tales and legends made it all up using the written German and Russian Dracula Stories (but also Chalcocondyles) because during their research they had not found anything which was clearly related to Vlad. Because they did not want to exclude such an important ruler like him from their folkloristic anthologies, they preferred to lie or, let’s judge them less severe, they preferred to act more like novelists or poets when writing about Vlad. Wanting to know if the Romanian tales are historical accounts or not, I visited a few years ago the Institute for Ethnology in Bucharest. I could talk there to qualified researchers and had a look upon the data once collected by professional ethnologists in all the regions of Wallachia. The results of their publications were gathered in a work by Tony Brill, written in the 1940s/50s but only published in the 2000s: Tony Brill: Tipologia legendei populare româneşti. Vol. 2: Legenda mitologică, legenda religioasă, legenda istorică. Ed. by Ioan Oprişan. Bucureşti 2006 Have a look at the introduction, the comparison of the concrete results (which are not very spectacular, but the same stories were again and again found about several voivodes) and especially at the pages 421-429. Later surveys like the one made by Georgeta Ene (supported by McNally and Florescu) in the 1960s have of course brought up many stories about Vlad told by peasant people. This was (and is) however a false memory because it was contaminated by the school education since the 19th century. People just grew up with the history lessons and books on the modern Vlad image and integrated it within their local memory. Interesting fact: the tales about his friend/ally/enemy Steven the Great, voivode of Moldova (1457-1504) are indeed historical. Steven however ruled for almost 48 years and had therefore plenty of time (and due to his wars and his vast resources also the means) to carve himself into the memory of all classes of society. Vlad with his 6 ½ years clearly did not."

I have Buican in my shelf and never read it because it is a popular biography which mixes all stories on Vlad. It may be entertaining but it is not accurate (as is the case of McNally/Florescu. The best book still is Stoicescu: Vlad Tepes (1976)). Some of the stories on Vlad are 19th century forgeries when romantic writers needed to invent Romanian traditions. It also happened that folktales about other rulers were wrongly attributed to Vlad the Impaler; this is where especially the stories around Peonari seem to come from.

Wow! That's an interesting point, that perhaps the Poenari battle did not actually take place. That's something I had not considered, as the fortress obviously faced many battles over the centuries. I assumed it had taken place, but that some of the more 'romantic' stories of his wife's suicide and the way he escaped may be made up or exaggerated, and have always been interested in learning more of what might really have happened. One book out of many I have read went into some details about the battle, including where the Turks placed their cannons on the mountain(s) etc. But that was a book entitled; 'The Impaler: A Biography of Vlad III Dracula' by Alexandru Buican, of course a Romanian source. I wonder where this detail comes from, or whether it's all just folktales?... I have read some bits of Chalkokondyles and many other sources, but, like you, have never found much definitive, which is of course difficult when studying such a 'dark age' of the middle ages.

I think its quite likely that Vlad's expeditionary commander most likely did betray him. Remember Vlad wasn't very popular among the Boyars who as shown in the video did end up turning against him for a Ottoman puppet because of how much he had clipped their wings and the fact that he killed so many of them didn't exactly make Vlad a very endearing leader.

Vlad was in peak of his power, by now he had very loyal people commanding beside him (at least in the army), he was going to be betrayed but only after the long imprisonment, during which obviously he lost his grip on things in Wallachia. So I agree that in this particular night attack , something must have gone wrong, as ShogunBean mentions maybe something like that.

It is likely though that he wasn't abandoned by his captain and that the support group just couldn't accomplish its task. A betrayal would have created much more reactions in the reports of the time, especially since there were many survivors after the battle able to testify (by contrast with another disputed case of possible betrayal at Kosovo, some decades earlier). The Wallachian forces were quite slim and unprofessional, with few exceptions probably also ill equipped. The maneuver was very difficult and it required a very accurate timing. You shouldn't always compare this with today's politicians or even with the later centuries of Wallachian history, when indeed betrayal was the case with some occasions. The Ottoman influence wasn't that much well imprinted in Wallachian politics in the 15th century, especially if it was the case with such an all-out invasion, when the sultan was there just to be taken out.

The greatest betrayal was still to come.... the sad part. Mathias kept Vlad imprisoned for 11 to 12 years. Some say his cousin Stefan helped to get him released, or it may just be that Vlad promised to marry one of Mathias' relatives, and made some kind of pact/deal that would give Mathias the upper hand. However after those 11 years imprisoned he returned and took once more the throne of Wallachia by force, only to be killed before or during a battle with Ottomans. Since they dont mention how he died, that was probably the worst kind of betrayal ... im sure he was double crossed , ottoman sources always mention , or even brag how events take place, sometimes they write poetry about such events, yet they dont mention anything on how the death of Vlad takes place. I would guess they either didnt know details or they were ashamed to write them down. (Yes it was probably the boyars that got him killed, wouldnt be first time they do it to a duke of his family). But whats also sad about it... obviously he lost a lot of his influence and strength during the long imprisonment .

Great video!...Unfortunately you omitted to say something very important! All the soldiers used by Vlad in this attack were dressed with Ottoman uniforms (obtained in a previous campaign for punishment of the Turks) and the Turks in the confusion created, began to kill each other. Were killed between them until the morning when they began to recognize each other! The only reason why the sultan has escaped with life it was that, in that night he slept in another tent! However two great viziers (Isaak and Mahmud) were killed in their tents which were beside to the sultan's tent! I would recommend you see this movie kzonlines.info/up/l56oepzYd3lneWg/bejne which was made moustly based on historical evidence! Anyway, thank you for this video and for your interest in the history of Romania!

@bla bla Naturally, I am not saying it’s not a fascinating bit of history and I would never suggest that we shouldn’t study it. I completely agree with you, my point was just that we need to look at historical events objectively, it is important to understand the why and how, but also that I think we have many better role models throughout the annals of history than the military men who are the most studied and commended. My point was just that a good society and a good world shouldn’t be crafted in the image of men who, by necessity, were forced to slaughter. Violence is not a good personality trait, and I just think we ought to be wary when we heap praise upon people such as him.

Vlad was arrested by the Hungarians because he refused to give up his fight against Radu the Handsome and king Matthias Corvinus feared that this would provoke the sultan to attack Hungary (Matthias was Vlad's sovereign and therefore responsible for his actions). So Matthias locked him up and spread the word that Vlad was the worst tyrant of all time. But he did not kill him because 1) Vlad was married to a relative of Matthias, meaning that an heir would qualify the royal family of Hungary for the Wallachian throne in the future 2) Vlad was a highly skilled general specialized on fighting the Ottomans. He was too valuable to be killed, so Matthias put him in the Visegrád Castle for some time (an honourable detention place for noblemen) and reactivated him later when a new major war with the Ottomans broke out.

In fact ottomans used that method often along with decapitation , way before Țepes. Vlad just got inspired by his ottoman surroundings , where he actually lived with his brother while they were young. We shouldnt be talking about whats low and not because back in those times people would have done far wore wooorse things than we would do nowdays and of course that the repercussions were scary .

They also had to fight within the country and part of it is mentioned in the video ffs,, vlad was winning because his forces were much more mobile,, if the hungarians came and the battle became an open field clash, the Ottomans would have had the advantage,, the hungarians standing still was in vlad's favor at first,, till he was arrested anyways.. He was really good at guerrilla warfare like mentioned in the video, but what he did to dead bodies and killing the civilians was really low

As a senior software dev and having collaborated with graphic designers in the past, as well as a long time history afficionado I think I have a fair idea on the amount of research, project planning and execution effort that goes into these videos. I really love your videos, the animation and narration style and I think they are even better than those on Kings and Generals, which says a lot. I sometimes insert details about arms and armor, like in the Battle of Hemmingstedt video, where types of weapons, armor and artillery carried great significance to the story. Having said that, equipment is always an interesting topic, but it's often hard to choose what to include and what to exclude, without making the video too long. However, I do plan on occasionally making 'video specials' that don't include battles, but rather focus on topics like castle building, weapons, armor, tactics, leader biographies etc.

@Sinan Ermiş Vlad has no equivalent in romanian history...from completely entirely another point of view! It is the way history is taught.: please be informed that Vlad ' s main image in Romania is not his external deeds, but internal achievements. I don t want to say people are not proud of his fightings, but his main traits of character, his individuality come up from his INTERNAL regime. Try to imagine that the bloodish part is not emphasised at all, considered enemy saxon etc written propaganda about him, (and carefully counter-claimed in own version of propaganda style) and this is possible just because another segment of legends and stories and prints entered the public opinion, i would call it propaganda but still had not been used by populists because easily can be overturned against them. These stories popular in Romania show Vlad as a judger and reformer, just, fair, symbol of internal justice, symbol of the fight against corruption before even the notion of fighting against corruption, symbol of protecting the poor against the abuses of the rich. Fair and tough also, but for a reason, social justice. He is THE maker of a just society, an ideal. 11:39 Reminds me of Sancho the Strong, king of Navarre, who during a battle against the moors he and his knight charged straight through enemy lines reaching the sultans tent, which was surrounded by heavy chains with a single emerald in the middle, the guards chained to it as well. Sancho cut the chains with his sword trying to reach the enemy general, who seeing such a fierce opponent decided to flee. To this day the chains with the emerald that Sancho cut are part of the coat of arms of Navarre, land of Basques

Impale fewer peasants, more boyars and this might have gone differently. Completely upending the social order ala Ghengis might have allowed him to avoid the betrayal of the nobility and it doesn't seem like the traditionalists in Europe had sufficient spine at this time to intervene against a determined enemy with Islam looming on the horizon. Good video. Always floored by Vlad's tactical brilliance, brutality and sheer brass balls.

in his first rule he gathered the boyars that betrayed his father and impaled all of them, including their wives, then gave their lands to only people he can trust, but alas, as you can also tell from Crusader kings, nobles are always ready for a good ol' backstabbing as they're never fucking satisfied with anything.

I think that betrayal is why he choose the stake way. According to chronicles, the 1st feast he had with his boyard after taking the throne he asked them how many state head did they knew during their life, and some claimed to have survived dozens of them, that's what sealed their fate.

You should check the Marasti, Marasesti and Oituz battles, which happened in World War 1, I find them quite interesting and I think you will too, given your interest in history.
