I’m a percussionist, and I showed this to my band leader. He literally suggested to kick me out of the band, and get that Lego machine instead of me… Edit: I don’t know how this comment got that many likes. I hope it’s not because you agree with my band leader.

I've been looking for a "mechanical CPU " model. This contraption could be considered to be a combination of a computer oscillator and the control unit. The moving belt / output pegs could be thought of as a programmable RAM / ROM It is also "micro programmable". If the piezo plates were replaced by a copy of the "output peg thing", and actually, if multiple " belt-peggers" were chained together, you have the components to make a mechanical CPU. In fact this thing looks like a real life version of what the Minecraft cpu's look like.

Are the transducers hard wired to the drum machine ? Or are they outputting to MIDI ? If they aren't .... they could be .. If you make multiple copies of this thing , you could make a "Mechanical Lego" Orchestra !

this is really cool. they really have added a lot of neat parts to the technics line since i was a kid (most of my [still sorted, lol] lego collection is circa late 80's and 90's; just before first mindstorms came out). it also makes me really happy to see that because for a long time in the 2000s-2010s i remember being saddened at the increase of highly set-specific parts in kits (instead of creative use of generic parts). i think the last technics set i ever purchased was the 8880 (which was amazing). might be time to modernize my collection!

If the sensor pads detect velocity, if you made some space in the mechanism, I'm sure you could support different velocities of drum notes by using different pin lengths. The longer the pin, the further back it pulls the rubber band, causing the head to hit the sensor with more velocity.

@Keith Anderson what's mind blowing about it? it does the job, nothing too fancy. The problem is, we've gotten so used to crappy videos straight from phones, that a basic sound cross fade and speeding up some of the footage seems like a work of genius. anyone of us could make this in an afternoon with some basic software. We've just gotten too lazy to bother.
