Tengrism Episode 1: Original Religion of the Turks and Mongols
In which God did the Turks actually believe before they accepted Islam? This is a question that I have often been asked by relatives, friends and you, the KZonlines community. In the Turkic Book of Divination, which was written in the 9th century in East Asia, a certain name drops many times throughout the text: Tengri. This being is there described as the God of the Turks. It is him who the Turks - and other steppe peoples like the Mongols and Huns - prayed to before converting to other religions.
Thus, the original religion of all Turkic peoples - i.e. the Anatolian Turks, Kazakhs, Tartars, Uighurs and so on - was Tengrism, a religious system built around its name-giver.
But who was/is Tengri exactly? Weren't the Turks and Mongols used to be Shamanists? Contrary to popular belief, these two peoples as well as many other ethnicities of the Eurasian Steppe were followers of Tengri, the omnipotent ruler of the eternal blue sky - as Genghis Khan once put it. The Shaman only played a marginal role within the blief system. But in spite of its monotheistic direction, there existed many other deities within Tengrism, including Umay, the protector of the unborn, and Mother Earth. There were also Gods of Fire, the Sun, the Moon and even a guardian of the underworld. Therefore, in this video we take a look at Turkic mythology in particular.
Tengrism in general was built on the belief that all life on earth is connected, and that heaven and hell were situated literally above and beyond humandkind. But unlike other religions, Tengri and other deities were not specifically targeting humands whenever they did something wrong. Instead, all life was part of a delicate balance of the powers - on earth, in heaven and in the underworld. The Turks, Mongols and so on were educated to learn to respect nature and all animals around them. They were being raised to refrain from waste, gluttony and destruction of nature.
In this sense, Tengrism was less a religion and more a philosophy on life. A belief system that might very well be relevant in our contemporary world.

In Korean mythology, there is a god called 'Tangun', transcribed in chinese characters as 檀君. The interesting part is, that these characters sounded as 'tang-gur' in old chinese. So the original 'name' or the original 'sound' of 'Tangun檀君' is actually 'Tangur' or something similar. I think this is somewhat connected to 'Tengri'.

Most of the religions seems to be some distorted form of Sanatan Dharma, It is an ancient vedic religions, unfortunately our ancient universities and libraries were destroyed by Islamic invaders, there is huge knowledge base that got destroyed with it and that could throw light to the various cults and religions present in ancient times and how those were related to Sanatan Dharma.

I am admirer of Tengriism, both as one who has returned to his own ancestral faith (of my German, Flemish and Spanish ancestors before we were converted by the Church), and one who spent alot of time in Turkey and came to love that country. We the Germanic, Celtic and Iberian tribal peoples of Europe shared alot of similarities with Tengriism. As reported by Tacitus for example, we worshipped outside in the open and especially in sacred groves, and didn't portray the Deities in anthropomorphic form. Totemism and spirit animals, especially wolves (to whom there were many consecrated warrior initiates) and certain birds we shared with the Tengriists. Belief in the Sky Father, whom we gave different names (such as Germanic Ziu from *Tiwaz), coming from Indo-European *Dyeus Pater. Only the Greeks and later the Romans portrayed him in form. I am glad this video stresses the polytheism of Tengriism, because there are efforts to water down/subvert even native, nature-based faiths by turning them into monotheisms. Of course, not every spiritual being was a deity - this too we share with the Tengriists, such as the various land and nature spirits, lake and water spirits, etc..We were animists and lived in balance with Nature, of which we are a part. We had a cyclical view and in our cosmology, had the World Tree connecting all the various worlds or realms. Our stories such as about Wodan or Lugus, etc. express alot about traveling between these different realms with all the esoteric qualities that entails. Its interesting that we too (both Germanic and Celtic/Iberian) personified the Moon as masculine and Sun as feminine. I believe many of the similarities between ours and the Tengriists came from a primordial time when we lived side by side on the Steppes as nomads, but also just observing the cosmos and earth. I would love to see the Turkish people I came to admire, and I benefitted alot from Turkish hospitality when I was there, return to Tengriism. Just as so much of our own Paganism and Heathenry survived through folk traditions and folklore despite being Christianized outwardly, alot of the unique customs I learned about in Anatolia have nothing to do with Islam. Its Tengriist with some elements too of Indo-European traditions of Anatolia (Hittite, Phyrgian, Luwian, etc.). Turkic history long proceeded Islam and the Turks would have been a great people regardless of their conversion.

@isha strega Agreed. Religions are like a river who take on the materials and nutrients of the people whom it washes up on. Alot of this is pragmatism, because the religions have to convert a people so must co-opt some of their customs. In Anatolia, I came across so many unique customs that were foreign to all the Arabs and other Muslims I knew back in America. Now I realize because those were holdovers from both Tengriism and ancient Anatolian peoples. Few "Islamic" countries (people just assume the majority is Muslim just because they were born into a nominally Muslim culture) I know have preserved so much of their pre-Islamic culture (some other examples that come to my mind are Morocco and Indonesia) - Turkey is more the exception than the norm. The followers of Sanatana Dharma I would counsel to be careful about the "All is One". My own peoples were converted to Christianity exactly because as Polytheists, we were too welcoming to the new faith. This includes the figure of "Jesus" whom I now think was constructed by the Roman dynasty called the Flavians and successive governments/priestly classes because it was a powerful myth to control others. I would advise Indians to be on their guard against all the Abrahamic attempts to subvert their beautiful ancient faith. The missionaries did that when they converted my own peoples, it was a gradual effort that included them introducing the figure of Jesus whose qualities they changed to suit our own worldview. Then as they changed more and more, we took on the conquerors' faith in a subservient manner.

The Turks seemed to have absorbed Islam as a part of Tengrism much like Hindus of my aquaintance accept Jesus as part of the "All Is One" worldview or the many are the one in essence. I love Turkey and see Tengrism in their love of animals in particular the cats of Istanbul.

@Infinite I agree, in so far as it's Sanatana Dharma. It's Natural Law engrained in every tribal people. Each one had their own unique tribal faith that differed in certain details and practices to reflect the unique landscapes, but all were at their core Dharmic. I am one who appreciates that Sanatana Dharma can provide some guidance and wisdom in reclaiming what those of us from European ancestry had, for example in formulating a sadhana, the spiritual importance of mantras, and insights into karma and reincarnation (both of which were also known to our ancestors but in other names). This unbroken chain represented by Sanatana Dharma is of utmost value to humanity.

@dumdum dumdum Very interesting, thank you! Were these ancient sages the Rishis? Its no accident that worldwide there are memories of ancient sages who taught skills and wisdom, such as Viracocha in the Andean civilizations. Likewise the accounts of the cataclysm(s). There seemed to be a change in consciousness afterwards, so what was known innately by symbols then had to be re-taught to people in the new way of logical speaking. These sages spread such knowledge and wisdom as the megaliths and symbols, as well as reminding people of the reverence for Mother Earth and the sacredness of the Sun. Also memory of these cataclysms was preserved worldwide, even in the most isolated areas. Concerning the history of the entire globe, we can also say the remarkable scientific knowledge of the Vedas, including the roundness of the Earth and the measurement of its circumference. Just like Christianization in Europe, the Islamic invaders of India wanted to eradicate the knowledge, the sacred connection to land and the Old Deities, even the very perception of time and themselves. Yet they could never destroy the Vedas despite all their best efforts, even with the alleged blessings of their god. And just as they do with the Moorish invaders of Iberia and elsewhere, Western Leftist academics idolize the Islamic invaders of India and constantly shame Vedic civilization.

@K Ts hahahahahahaa What would you say to the Göktürk empire or that the Mongolian empire has risen with the Turks since its beginning? In fact, if your people, the Turks, had not migrated from Central Asia in general, you would have remained a minority or you would have been assimilated? I don't hold a grudge or love towards the mongols, it doesn't matter much to me, but it's true what you said in your comment is true. While the Turks only believe in tengri, your card to the shamanism tengri religion was when our ancestors left their religion and belonged to the Abrahamic religions, the belief in tengrism became your belief and you destroyed it, you mixed it with buddhism and It's a shame you turned that religion into a piece of garbage in the end. and most likely the mongolian empire that you are very proud of has risen thanks to the turks, it is most likely that the mongolian army that you are proud of was only mongolian in name, the majority of them were Turks anyway, the reason why the mongols were able to conquer such large lands was because they followed the steps of the previous steppe turkish empires in the right way.

Man, I don't know if you are from a Turkic country by your accent, but you have definitely done your homework. Very well done. I am a Turkish Tengrist/Agnostic and I try to live my life in accordance with the Tengrist way. The beautiful thing about Tengri is he/she/it (we don't have a gender-based version of those words in Turkish we just say "o" for all) doesn't need your approval, or constant prayer, or your acknowledgement that he/she/it is the greatest. He/she/it only judges you by your good deeds regardless of who you are, where you are born, rich, poor, white, black, gay, straight, fat, skinny, none of that matters. You are not judged like in semitic religions. And equality is a really important element too. In modern Turkey we have lost the importance of equality somewhat. Yes we are a secular country but we are ruled by the Islamic people and a lot of our culture has shifted to Islamic ways. We have so much female murders and abuse in Turkey. This sort of thing would never happen under Tengrism. And yes we still practice many tengrist traditions, most people do it without knowing because of ''örf, adet" meaning customs & tradition. Before the rule of law we were governed by örf. Like today, when the Muslim eid happens and they sacrifice animals, we still dip our fingers in the blood and make a mark on our foreheads. We still tie cloth at trees to make wishes, we still carry the evil eye, many things. There is a somewhat reawakening of Tengrism in Turkey nowadays. I don't think it will ever be as popular as Islam, with 90%+ of the country being Muslim, but more and more people are finding out about their ancestral religion and leaving Islam. And to everyone who newly found out about Tengrism, read more about it. You don't have to convert to Tengrism, but if you understand its teachings and philosophy, you won't need to. Also, in these difficult times I want to say Slava Ukraini for my brothers in Ukraine who are facing a horrible war against humanity by the Putin regime. You will pull through this, we will do everything we can to help you.

@Akyaren 1-) putting laws that privileges women is bad because it can be exploited by them.( like alimony, privileges in enviroment) Instead, give them more responsibilies, teach them how to deal or fight with problems and you will achieve true equality. 2-) i dont quite think that pagans treated women as equal as men. As i know, women usually stayed back with childen and elderly, while men go to war. Maybe more equal than middle east, chinese and europeans at that time but don't forget that they were successors only when there was no male heir. About tomris, she was good leader but there are more paganic male leaders that were also successful, meaning males had more opportunities. Also she is stolen by the westerner under the name of "indo-europeans".

Kuvvet karazehir When driving from one city to another along highway there are "Holy" spots, "Mazar" - usually a well(spring) or a tree in between arid, desert like places. So there people stop, read (cite) Kuran(not all but Fatiha surah, 3 times Ikhlas surah) for the passed ancestors and relatives. Tie a piece of cloth on branches of tree. Then continue on their trip.

thanks for this video, it reflects some aspects o our history, culture and life philosophy, today, though many Turks have adopted islamic faith, some christians, and some still adhering to the Tengrist belief (in the Altai/Tuva and Siberia) we still call the Creator God Tanrı or Tengri but ofcourse within the description of respected faith, nevertheless Tengri for us always is understood as the Omnipotence One God that resembless non of His creation. In Indian literature warrior clans are divided into 4 major lineages 1)Sun Dynasty 2)Snake-Reptile Dynasty 3)Fire Dynasty 4)Moon Dynasty

Tengrism likely influenced or had a similar origin with the shamanistic beliefs in Korea (not sure how they are called in Korean), Taoism in China, and Shintoism in Japan. The Sinitic people also believed that there was an omnipotent and omnipresent sky god called "Tian" ("Tian" means sky), resulting in traditional idioms like "人在做天在看" (People do things but the sky is watching them). The ancient Sinitic emperors offered sacrifices to the sky each year. Not sure why people often group Chinese with SE Asians and imagine Chinese as rice farmers. It's true that Southern Chinese have had significant admixtures with SE Asians and rice is their staple food, however the earliest Sinitic people originated from Northern China, were millet farmers, and according to recent genetic tests on their corpses and skeletons they were closer to Koreans, Japanese, and Mongols than to Southern Chinese and SE Asians.

@Zaboy Bagoi According to a genetic study of the early Sinitic Erlitou remains published by the Chinese Central Academy of Sciences in 2011, the ancient Erlitou people are genetically close to North Chinese, Northeast Chinese, Koreans, and Honshu Japanese but are rather distant from Far South Chinese and SE Asians.

@Zaboy Bagoi True, South Chinese especially Far South Chinese (Guangdong and Guangxi) indeed look noticeably different from North Chinese, whereas those from the Yangtse region can still resemble North Chinese sometimes, which is likely due to historical migrations.

I had no idea of this! I am very happy to have learned a bit of this path. It sounds like a very sound system and it is a shame, that it is not present ( or not much) as a whole today. Philosophies like this have a great way to describe a healthy balance and it is sad, that so much of that is drawn away by todays abrahamic religions and their very biased systems.

I have always been a Nature mystic. I feel a particularly deep connection with the natural world and get most of my inspiration from it. I explored all the religions and got the most from Hinduism and Buddhism but also Daoism. I also am a believer in science and the scientific method. In recent times I have concluded that we should be worshipping the Sun because we are entirely dependent on the Sun. The Sun is literally our sustainer. Of course many traditional peoples understood the importance of the Sun, but too many modern people have established certain humans or a deity with human characteristics as the power that we should be paying tribute to. I disagree with that. We should be worshipping the natural world and most of all the Sun the sustains all life.

The word Tengri, Tenggri, comes from "Tengger" -> wheel, or round, which is also the name of the Shaman Drum in some Turkic languages (which itself also is sacred). In the particular case of "Tengri-God", it moreso has a meaning like "Turning Order", or the "Cosmic Wheel" Tengri is a God in Tengriism, but it is a "Place God", the Universe, eternal Cosmic Order. There are other personified Gods in many versions of Tengriism -> Such as Ulgan/Ulgen/Ylgan, Erlik, Umai/Umay/Ymay and many others Tengriism is also very interesting in that most religious songs are "Hıyğız" or "Praise to Nature", which still exist in many centrail asian cultures, in particular Altai people, whose songs still about praising their rivers, forests, mountains etc

There is no such a thing as Tengrism. It is a recent terminology. The traditional beliefs of Mongols were Shamanism. It has nothing to do with ancient Turkish people's paganism, before Islam was introduced to Turkish people. Turkish people are descendants of various ethnic groups in West Asia (Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Tadjekistan, and Tatarstan) and Middle East (Levant) and Balkan region (Albania and Cyprus). This KZonlines vlog will be invalidated soon by trusted scientific sources.

@E001 Dude I'm a Muslim. And I'm saying these traditions existed long before Islam. The prophet Muhammed historically came after Isa. Islam didn't officially exist until after Isa. Seriously stop believing your dumb Wahhabi myths and actually read a history book. For example Dikhr beads used to recite the 99 names of Allah used in other faiths like Hinduism and Buddhism long before Islam lol. The symbol of Islam, crescent moon and star, middle eastern, and Turkic symbol long before Islam. The hand of Fatima I think came from Jews at one point. The many different Sufi groups will tell you that. Islam is nothing new. It just seems to reiterate the beliefs and traditions of already what people in those areas were doing. And where ever Islam went it embraced the different cultures it touched. And guess what old practices became Islamic lol. It happens. Especially in parts of India, Java, West Africa, China, and other places. That's the power of Islam, people all from diverse cultures and countries embracing Allah. Their were over 73 sects within Islam all claiming to follow the Ahlulbayt, the sahaba, and Sunnah of the prophet. Yours sadly is a weird Arabcentric post colonial stupidity followed by King Fahad enforced by Saudi Arabia..

10:06 As far as I remember, Dingir was NOT a sumerian god, the meaning of that word is heaven or home of the gods. The sign for that was also used toghether with other words, to simbolise its heavenly or divine nature or its divine connection. Example: Ka Dingir 𒆍𒀭 - the Gate to Heaven (Gate of Gods), while the same Dingir (𒀭) would appear right before a name - if that was a name of a god: 𒀭𒊩𒌆𒄢 is Dingir Ninsun or Ninsumun - the Goddes Ninsun Worth noting however, that the symbol 𒀭 was used for both "Dingir" (by Sumer) and "AN" (by later Akkadians) - where An was the All-Father Still a great video about a religion, which also was followed by Hungarians (Magyar) - thank you

My parents decided that their children will be Muslim just like my dads Turkic side of the family, and i Love Islam and I Love Christianity, since these are the religions I grew up with but the older I got and the more I learned about Tengri, the more Tengrism resonated with me and I’m happy to say after years of being an agnostic and being unsure of what to believe in I have found my way to tengrism just last year. I‘m still looking for other people to share this with, but there aren’t so many people here in Germany that follow this philosophy and I would love to exchange with people who grew up with it and can tell me more about it since it’s pretty hard finding information about rituals (apart from those I already know) and traditions.

Tengri being a god worshipped by steppe people... it makes me remember that the Indo-Europeans were a steppe people. They also worshipped a sky-father god, whose name was Dyeus. Dyeus is the ancestral deity to all Indo-European sky fathers, and they all owe their names to him. Zeus, Jupiter, Teiwaz (Týr), Devas and the Daghda are a few examples. Tengri may me the same as Dyeus, but not derived from him like Zeus. Tengri and Deyus might be of the same origin, a VERY ancient religion followed by VERY early humans.

I am a Turk raised as casual secular sunni muslim. Even my family was a modernist one, I had attended summer school in a mosque to learn how to pronouncuate Quranic Arabic. It was casual by then in 80’s. In my university years and later on, I dove deep in to meal (Turkish transcription of Quran). I was really informed in Islam so that I could even argue with imam hatip school graduates who were taught widely on religion. On the other hand, I had a good education, fundemantal natural sciences in middle school and lycee, then a good engineering education in a reputable school. I also need to remind those; I (and my sister) have a track record on sleep paralysis from my mother and she has the same phenomenon from her grandfather. We also have some strange feelings time to time. Anyway, I began to feel something was wrong with Islam, mostly the ethical issues and nonchanging eternal laws which meant to be literally universal. That led me to deism when I realized all abrahamic religions are man (literally man) made orders to stabilize the society in that era. Can there be any law which is universal, universal in any civilization, in any time, while the conditions and necessities keep changing? Obviously no! For the last fibe years I dropped out of deism too, a mere result of dealing with more and more science as I get older. Now, I define myself as an agnostic pantheist, but I feel the unrest within, knowing that thşngs would be far more easy if I believed in something. This video just happened to appear on top of my time. I watched it, my eyed getting wet as I watched more. For the basics, tengrism has all the ethical approach I long for my life; equality between man and woman, a non-personalized creator, judging people if they are good or bad without considering their race or religion, respect for nature, the balance, the cycle, consumption non troppo… We Turks had a beautiful religion until Nizamülmülk had to decide a system for three different societies under Selchuk’s reign, unsettled (still nomad) Turks, settled Turks and local nations. That was the point of no return.

I'm from Bulgaria (North-East) from my father's side and South-West from my mother's). I could see traditions and beliefs from Tengrism and the Slavic mythology embedded in our Christianity or followed on its own. Khan Asparuh, the ruler of Bulgars credited with the establishment of the First Bulgarian Empire in 681 worshiped Tangra. For more short info: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Bulgarian_Empire

@Süleyman Kamburoğlu , there are many words from Sanskit origin in Bulgaria. "BALH" -"to shine", "to speak", could be the origin of the name!? Bulgarians love the name "бял,а"-(bhial,a) translation-"white". We love to name places, cities, rivers with that name. Why not our home, or in memory of our ancestors- " the shiny ones"!? There are legends from Phanagoria as well as "The White Brotherhood" followers reaching to France...

@Süleyman Kamburoğlu, there is nothing more obvious than modern genetic research results! Nowdays Bulgarians have Eastern European and Western Eurasian ancestors, predominantly Slavs, Thracians, and Onogurs. You are talking about Onogurs, right!? Onogur Вulgars on the western Pontic-Caspian steppe (modern southern Ukraine and southwest Russia). Great Old Bulgaria ( with Phanagoria as capital) was originally centered between the Dniester and lower Volga. The etymology of the ethnonym Bulgar is not completely understood; it is difficult to trace the name back earlier than the 4th century AD. It is generally believed to derive from the Turkic verb bulğha (to "stir", "mix", "disturb", "confuse"), possibly suggesting that other Turkic peoples regarded the Bulgars as a "mixed" people or "rebellious". If other tribe call this people "rebellious" it doesn't mean necessarily they come as rebels from this tribe! 😒 There are several theories about the origin of the name Onogur. In some Turkic languages on means "10" and ğur "arrow"; and "ten arrows" might imply a federation of ten tribes, i.e. the Western Turkic Khaganate. Within the Turkic languages, "z" sounds in the easternmost languages tend to have become "r" in the westernmost Turkic languages; therefore, the ethnonym Oghuz may be the source of Oghur; that is, on Oğur would mean "ten clans of Oghuz". The legend about the unbreakable bunch of arrows is known by any Bulgarian, but they have the same legend in China as well... Anyway, try to find DNA analysis by Bulgarian youtubers to see the obvious!

@Светлана Also in Turkish, the Bulgarian word means "to interfere" and "rebel". VII. Konstantin says that the Bulgarians called themselves "Onog" in advance. The word "onog" means ten arrows in Turkish. The word arrow is used in the same sense as the word boy in the Turks. When we look at the history, we see the Western Turkic Khaganate of the community called "Onog" as the founding lineage. In fact, the Western Turkic Khaganate is also called the Onoq Empire. The people of the khaganate, destroyed by the Tang dynasty, had already migrated to the west, where their kipchak and Tatar relatives had previously lived, and they had established a new state there.the Volga Bulgarians, weakened by the Caspian attacks, were assimilated by the kazan Turks, who remained in the north, and those who went to the south were assimilated by the Slavs. Are you now denying the evidence that is so solid and obvious?

@Светлана The Bulgars were Turkic tribes of Oghur origin,[6][7] who settled north of the Black Sea. During their westward migration across the Eurasian steppe, they came under the overlordship of the Khazars, leading other ethnic groups, including Finnic and Iranic peoples.[6] About 630 they founded Old Great Bulgaria which was destroyed by the Khazars in 668. Kubrat's son and appointed heir Batbayan Bezmer moved from the Azov region in about AD 660, commanded by the Kazarig Khagan Kotrag to whom he had surrendered. They reached Idel-Ural in the eighth century, where they became the dominant population at the end of the 9th century, uniting other tribes of different origin which lived in the area.[8] Some Bulgar tribes, however, continued westward and eventually settled along the Danube River, in what is now known as Bulgaria proper, where they created a confederation with the Slavs, adopting a South Slavic language and the Eastern Orthodox faith.

@Süleyman Kamburoğlu Bulgarians have never been Turkish tribe, it's nonsense! P.S. my mistake, I wrote "Turkish", but you wrote Turks. It is questionable, different scholars are arguing, I'm not historian.

Evidence points to the Finno-Ugrians also having an integral sky deity, whose name was derived from the word "ilma" meaning sky or weather. Names for deities related to the sky can be found from Finland to western Siberia. Although the early Indo-European borrowed "juma" and names derived from it largely replaced the much older name among western Finno-Ugric speaking groups. For example, the Finnish "Jumala" now specifically refers to the Christian God while before Christianization, it likely was a the name of a specific sky deity which was compared to the Christian God hence the name came to have a Christian meaning. Although I don't personally believe the Finno-Ugric and larger Uralic family to have an ancestral link with the Turkic or Mongolic groups, it is still interesting to draw parallels and compare these groups and the similar religious and cultural aspects found in northern Eurasia and on the steppe.

Im Muslim/Pagan. And i have deep respect for every religion because Tengri show's its presence to people in a way they would understand, could he Allah, Jesus or even Odin, Tengri could take many forms and be called many names. But he is the ruler of the cosmos, the source of all energy, he is the universe, he is all of us.

Pagan means worshipping more than one god. La ilaha illallahu muhammadu rasullullah means I belive in one God and Muhammad is the last messenger until the day of judgement. So no you can't be a pagan and a muslim. You should learn about Islam.

Can only be one Muslim or a Mushrik (pagan) as there's no reconciliation with the two especially when Islam denounces the worship and association of others with Allah (God) himself.

The intersections of (Tibetan) Buddhism and Tengrism are fascinating, in as much as they're recorded. I'd say more, but in all honesty, I don't understand it myself. I'm not even an amateur anthropologist - I'm just some idiot on a quest to read culturally significant epic poetry.

totally true. but anthropologists think that after animism, shamanism was the first belief of all people around the world. isn't that crazy? people in different countries sharing the same belief system before they knew what a continent is. tengriism came right after that for all steppe people without having any mantras or putting a human on a god-like status. ps: buddhism is pretty cool, hinduism is also ok imho.

It's amazing to see that all the religion in the beginning had a monotheistic concept of a all powerful onmipotent God that changed with time. I think Tengri was also translated as the Great heaven( meaning the blue sky) or the one that rules over it. If I am not wrong Chinese believed that there Fate is decided by heaven I.e Tengri know do not take this literally as it was interpreted differently. I am not too sure about the last one so please do not take this literally ok✌✌

@James Stevenson seriously 😕😕 so you are just going to ignore above comments. And you are right Thor and Zeus exist in reality they were not the imagination of people living in different geographical regions amazed by supernatural phenomenon and humans being amazed by something greater than themselves but limited by their imagination they truly existed😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

@Muneeb Noman I think what As A man thinketh was saying was, that first, simple societies had monotheistic beliefs, then ancient and classical era societies developed polytheistic beliefs as their societies got more complicated. THEN, monotheism came around again (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) in even more complex societies. Not that Islam is simple because monotheism.

@Baited MT I am just curious is every turk like this? I realised turks tend to get offended or angry whenever I talk about religion. Islam is like a taboo word for them. It's always secular this secular that. I mean if you look at modern America people have become degenrates and cultureless. Is Turkey like that? Or is it any different from Europe?

Tengrism is very similar to Animism or Shamanism. We did not pray to the statues or Gods with human like figures. But only thing that was solemn or holy was nature. Tengri means the Sky. Other god that was written in inscriptions is Yir-Suw. While Yer-su means land and water in Turkish. What I mean is, our ancestors knew that it was nature that gave us life. Not a Human-Like god with magic. They respected nature and believed that miracles happen because of the soul of an ancestor, or a mountain or the Sky ! There is also Umay Katun but she appear as a deer just like Tengri appear as a wolf, so they are not similar to other mythologies. This is a much older religion like Native Americans' religion. Influences on Greek, Roman, Middle Eastern pantheons/religions cannot be seen in Tengrism. And This is why I really like it and preserve it. It's so pure. But we don't have books that tell our religion like other religions and this is a sad thing. Kam, religious Tengrists in the past, did not write its all rituals or pantheon in books. They knew Old Turkic script according to Dr. Ercilasun but they did not write... Today still lots of Tengrist practices continue in Turkey's villages but they don't know that these things are Tengrist and coming from pre-Islam era of history :D My grandfather was really religious muslim but when my mother told me some of their practices, I was shocked because they were the same that I read in Shamanism books :D

I think it was a passed down prayer from old Turkic steles (Orkhon? I don't know) to Umay, wishing for fertility of the land. But I guess you already understood that since you seem to be Kazakh. If it was from Orkhon, its probably from Bilge Khan.

Actually, the shaman was almost always a woman, known as a 'kirikçi' or 'bonesetter' aka "wise women". My grandmothers entire female line were village bonsetters. It was her who inspired my interest in herbal medicine as a child and to eventually become a doctor.

Great video, but a small nitpick: The Turkic Runes at 0:43 are written incorrectly. Tengri should be written as 𐱅𐰭𐰼𐰃𐰾𐰢 rather than that; in old Turkish, because of vowel harmony, most vowels were omitted from words, especially A/E, the "ng" noise (called the Velar Nasal, or nasal N) was actually a separate rune (𐰭). The "izm" part (which is just the -ism suffix written in modern Turkish phonetics is also technically not turkish, but it's fine since "tengrizm" is what it's called in modern Turkish as well, since it was named by foreign Turkologs). Just a bit of info, good video though.

Ancient Joseon(Korean) emperor was called as "Dangoon" (from 2333 BC). I think the terminology Tengri is originated from Dangoon. The capital city of ancient Joseon was Asadal (highly related to Astara in my opinion).

Thank you for explaining Tengriism to us. Tengriism was the state religion in Bulgaria until the 9th century. To this day we have preserved many things from this religion - the tree of life is found in embroideries and elsewhere, white and red thread is tied to all in early March. In Bulgaria the priest of Tengri (Tangra) was called kolobar. The Bulgarian khans obliged the Byzantine emperors to swear according to the religion of Tangra: to pour water from a cup on the ground, to turn horse saddles with their own hands, to touch a triple bridle, to raise grass high. This religion is also known from the answer of Pope Nicholas to the questions of the Bulgarians. It says that the flag of the Bulgarians is a ponytail and that they believed in good and bad days and hours to start work and battle.

@Brainblox Where is the evidence that Huns had a good named "Tangra"? Bulgarians called their god Edfu not Tangra. There is absolutely no proof of tengrism existing in Bulgaria. Scythians were North Iranic people and had a religion similar to other Indo European people. Their main deity was Thabata, the goddess of fire. No similarities with tengrism. Zoroastrism is only one of the many diferent religions practiced by iranians
Brainblox
Жыл бұрын
@Бaй Ганю Could it be that they just adopted the name Tangra for their main god from the Huns? It doesn't have to be necessarily the same god (IF its ever mentioned). Also, Skythians and Zoroastrianism is contradictory, Skythians as Steppe people believed in similar gods like Turks and Mongols. Zoroastrianism is a later religion from a settled civilization, not to say Persia. Even though both Iranic, Skythian and Persian culture was completely different. Hence all the wars under Tomyris etc.
