French People Try to Pronounce Difficult English Words
Жарияланды 3 жыл бұрын

I make French people pronounce difficult English words! It's simple, the rule is they have to be 100% French to participate. Then, I show them a series of hard English words and they have to attempt to say them out-loud. Thats it!

@Loya Frostwind its probably because the french people try to pronounce it very phonetically whereas fluent English speakers just mush the hell out of the word to become the schwa filled “squirl”

Learning French has helped me realize just how ridiculous English is: through, though, tough, trough, thorough, throughout, and thought are all different. My condolences to those having to make sense of it as a 2nd language

This is honestly so impressive. Reading out words you've never seen before, with pronunciations that some of which don't exist in your native language, is incredibly difficult. These participants nailed it.

While French isn’t a Germanic language like English is, I would say it’s medium difficultly. Romance languages have more things in common with English than say, Mandarin Chinese which is high difficulty. But if you already speak languages like Dutch or German, it should be a breeze for the most part. While I’m learning Russian and Spanish due to my job, I actually tried German words and I was fairly confident in my pronunciation of words.

If you struggle with pronouncing the “th” sound, don’t worry, there are plenty of English dialects/accents that pronounce it as a “t” sound. It’s predominantly an Irish thing, which means parts of the American South does it as well. Brad Pitt is a good example of that occurrence. But you’ll notice quickly, too, that Americans think accents are hot, so no worries 😁

@Mel It's very difficult to overcome once you are older, even by a few years. i wouldn't call that lazy, she did good making sure you wouldn't have to struggle as much! But sometimes its impossible not to poke fun at family. I love making fun of how my northerner Mom pronounces some words like a "proper" southerner now lol. You all sound like a lovely family, too. Hope you have the best new year yet! 🙏🕊🥰

My older sister from mainland China pronounces it as "F" and sje would make sure 6yr old me would not jearr her pronounce it like that. When I was growing up she would make me pronounce it as "th", now I'm an adult, I still bring it up to her whenever she mispronounces. I wouldn't mock her for it if she DIDN'T admit she never corrected herself because she's too lazy.

As much as I do like to come back to this video from time to time and laugh, it's so impressive that someone was able to come up to these people and show them extremely challenging words in a language they do not know and still get as close as they do. It's genuinely impressive and they should feel proud of themselves. I know if someone walked up to me and told me to guess some difficult French words I'd be completely screwed.

@Chuunosuke (The Squishiest Lawyer) Yeahhh, I see where you're coming from, I can imagine how annoyin that must be to have ppl tailing you on serious topics, like, really dude, good to know that you were "listening", lmao. But yeah, I'd ignore those kinds of ppl tbh, it's good that they know their video games and all, but their is a time and place for things like that. But what really surpises me is the fact that people still remember the game, if anything, I thought I was the only one who still remembers, and the fact that it's been 6 yrs too, like wow, time really flies by. And yeah, it's completely up to you if you want to change ur pfp, after all, it's your account and you're free to do what u wish with it. Personally for me, I change my pfp like, every month/2 months depending on how I'm feeling, lol. And also, you can change it back to Mae whenever you wish as well.
Chuunosuke (The Squishiest Lawyer)

@Ash yeahhh sadly it's rarity is why i really wanna change it...I've had it for about 6 years now and I'm a little sick of people mentioning it all the time...No offense meant to you, of course! I don't mind it on light-hearted video comments like here, but when I'm commenting about social issues or personal trauma and people reply with "OMG MAE!!!11!!!1! I GOT CUPS ON MY EARS!!" it kinda makes you wanna...change your online identity lol

I like how most of these words are words that to native English speakers are relatively easy because it really brings light to the fact that whether something is hard or easy is relative. If you grew up doing/saying/hearing something it's going to just come naturally to you, but if you didn't it's harder, like for French people that may not speak much English, some words that are easy for native English speakers are going to be harder.

I have been studying english for almost all my life, I'm pretty fluent and my pronunciation is not that bad. Honestly it's true, if you try, you can actually learn a language :) But I don't know how to study french, it's like, I've been trying for months and everything I see just confuses me the way more, even though French is pretty similar to spanish (my native language)- I FIND JAPANESE EASIER AND I DON'T GET WHY 😭

It’s funny to see how French people use the word « anticonstitutionnellement » to impress foreigners with difficult words but no one actually knows what it means. It can be translated into « unconstitutionally » and it’s the longest word of the French language. And believe it or not, but we only use it to show how clever we are, specially with non-French people. That’s how proud we are😬

Speaking is very complex mechanically as well as acoustically. We listen and detect certain sounds, rhythms etc while dismissing others. So sounds in one language would be dismissed, but would be essential in another language (H sound in English for example is often dropped by Europeans). To make these sounds, we work certain mouth muscles, tongue position, and many other factors. Each language would require different muscles etc, making it nearly impossible to pronounce certain foreign words unless we learn to shape our mouths etc accordingly. And even if you do, we need to train our ears to hear the required sounds that are important to that language. It can be very very difficult. Bravo to all these bilingual participants trying to say difficult English words while in Paris, to someone who doesn't appear to be able to speak any French.

English as a language is an upside down pyramid. It has a narrow entry point so the basics can be learned fairly quickly. A non-native speaker only needs to know a few words for a native speaker to understand, and perhaps fill in some grammatical gaps. Then it gets more complex as you hit all the weird spelling, odd pronunciation rules (ough has 6 different sounds!), endless idioms and, especially here in Britain, regional variations in phrases, use of slang etc. A lot of languages are the opposite. They have a very wide entry point but get easier as you go. We're just very lucky that so many other people speak our language.

@Strange_Gentleman no matter how i dislike russia, their language makes sense. English is pretty much the only language together with danish that make no sense. There are 0 words that are pronounced as they are written, and in whole english alphabet only 1 letter is spelled as it is written. :D Rest are like, A is not spelled A, its spelled EI for example in english. But if you look at original old english, its actually spelled as its written, but over time, most likely during danish conquests of england, it got stupified.

@ツツ ItzWaluigiTime86 Non aucune ne prime.

ツツ ItzWaluigiTime86
