As a Geo Ecology student with great interest for film and animation I’d love a project where you would film a nature documentary about small live in an ecosystem only to zoom out in the end to show the audience, that what they thought was an entire rain forest is actually the tank in this guys living room. Imagine the amazement over the video perspective, scientific study, ecological experiment and human craftsmanship!

I had an aquarium with enough plants and aquatic life that I eventually didn't need to put food in anymore. It was self sustaining and the water was crystal clear. Was like a master level setup. Crazy what nature can do if you just add the right ingredients and leave it alone. I had to move out of state an unfortunately gave it to a guy who didn't realize what he had. I think about that aquarium all the time. 😭

@Sid Java moss and another plant I can't remember the name. It started off as a single small plant and I just kept breaking off pieces and planting in other areas until it filled the whole tank. Random assortment of freshwater fish and nano shrimp. Fish ate the shrimp, shrimp ate the plants, algae and waste. Plants filtered the tank. I will try and do some research and see if I can come up with the other plant name.

Fortunately, the digital cameras for recording these kinds of ecosystems are getting better and better every day and the prices have come down to the point that even the most limited budgets can afford a few. Plus, resources like KZonlines can help expose your work to interested viewers around the world.

@the book of random You should add predators for the snails, have predators reproduce into larger populations, so that you can add more predators, and just keep the cycle going. Snyder’s Moray can grow up to 4.5 - 7 inches. They are a neat predator to have inside of your ecosystem, to catch shrimps, or snails while camouflaging inside the water.

@Flesh&Bones Wow, thanks for your reply! I wish I had the place and resources for such a big enclosure currently.. I have a 60x40x40cm paludarium tank with false bottom, bioactive with springtails, isopods, live plants and about 1/3 water area with a small waterfall. The online sellers usually say that a small bowl of water is sufficient for these crabs, but I usually distrust a big seller who explains how easy it is to provide for a certain animal - it shouldn't be about minimum requirements, but now I hope they will use the water part at all.. 😅 G. dennerle var. "dare devil" is one of my favourites. Initially I wanted to order them 2 days ago, but in the beginning of september we will have a terraristics convention here in Berlin and I decided to wait for it because I refrain from ordering animals online if there are alternatives. 5cm deep burrows are a very helpful information though - they will find places for it in my enclosure. Thanks for your detailed answer and greetings from Berlin!

      3 ай бұрын

@Kai Schiller I do have a Geosesarma dennerle, they are a "Daredevil" color morph (at least that's what they are called here). My tank is 90x90x45cm (W, H, D). They usually only are on the ground of the tank, sometimes behind a wooden structure close to the water - but almost never inside. My tank is very humid, it's currently more likely a swamp. I used a webcam to check if they ever come out. They are digging 4-5cm into the ground and live there, usually coming out when every light in the room is turned off and it's silent. It's a bioactive paludarium with shrimp, snails, isopods and (hitchhiked) mini centipedes. I've never seen them anywhere above ground level, neither have babies that I know of. Probably will build another "observer" tank to study them a little and build them a better enclosure later.

Man this was real cool to see. I kept terrariums and fish tanks and I kept the decor as realistic as possible. I didn't want my pets to feel like they were in captivity, so any environment they would be in in real life, is the environment I tried to have for them. I used real soil, real sand and real stones. The real plants take extra maintenance, so I used a lot of fake ones. I commend u for having healthy real plants. Those themselves need the perfect environment too. It may seem nerdy to ppl who can't appreciate stuff like this, but I'm amused by it. And the tropical storms were a real nice touch. Did u have a drainage system so the water levels don't get too high, or did it just evaporate between rain showers? And how long did the rain last each time? 🤔 I use to sit in front of my tanks for hours at a time. I had slight OCD when it came to the upkeep of my tanks. Keep em coming. Ppl like me enjoy this stuff 👌🏽

You aren’t lazy you just created more than this guy in the video ever has which is a real family. Not a tank full of things built to survive on their own but a family of people who rely on you. That the part that so many of my fellow under 30yr olds don’t get. These projects and other shit will never compare to what they are psychologically trying to compensate for.

@Lupinchen Brause I have a fish tank with only shrimp and Cory catfish and those live well together, the shrimp eat their own babies as soon as they hatch if they don't manage to hide in moss or other plants so I don't think his habitat is any exception, it's just how animals behave, true he could have added different creatures in to have less odds of them fighting but I definitely don't think he could have prevented it completely

Ideas for your saltwater ecosystem (I don't know how big it's going to be so it might not work out) but try making an above ground area (mostly for style since, even with a huge tank, it would be very small), and maybe add a store bought crab and/or lobster. Their are actually a few youtubers who do the same thing.
