I'm sure someone in these 200+ replies has probably said this but I can't read them all; but shots like that are for b-roll and cuts, filler stuff that helps with the flow of the scenes that they can cut out and splice into other parts of the fight to make it more dramatic or to follow the director/fight choreographers planned vision of the fight. They can only film that once, they can't just hold the show and the crowd up doing reshoots; so they have to get it all at once and do stuff like Jake comically not defending himself so they can get those shots that go between cuts.

It may look much different on the film. Could be a slow motion scene where it shows flashbacks of his past or whatever, then he just goes nuclear on the guy.

@Alpha thé na the audience didn’t get paid. They just shot the film scene during a real fight night. It’s very common. They sometimes do the same with movies that involve concerts, they tell the crowd what to do and then they shoot the scene. Extras on shoots like that don’t get paid. There are so many extras that work for free.

That was some old-school Hollywood fight choreography. One fighter drops his hands and eats a couple of massive shots, and then, as if energized by the concussion he just got, he lands a couple haymakers in return.

@Matthew Owens I'm with you. I am surprised that was part of the choreography to be honest. The only thing I can think of is the character he is playing is such a cocky and belligerent asshole he does it on purpose to humiliate his opponent. They can do a lot with editing and filming at specific angles that will look completely different compared to what we witnessed like you were saying though so who knows. Either way, it was fun to watch.

@Giraffe Sushi No, it didn't bother me. I actually find it interesting that people make absurd assumptions about people they know nothing about it and proceed to make personal attacks on strangers online. I simply was educating you on a subject I happen to know a LOT about, due to playing sports my whole life and being around steroid use. Not a knock against you, ignorance is bliss sometimes. Without muscle memory, do you comprehend what it would take someone in their mid 40's to put on that type of physique? Or even what % of body fat is needed to have visible abs like that & so pronounced? Or even understand a natural bodybuilder's shoulder shape Vs someone on steroids? On a personal note, this is not a critique on you, try listening to people sometimes before taking a stance on a subject, especially on something you obviously are clueless about

Man they really do make fight scenes much more realistic when filming with the right camera angles and special effects. Watching it from ringside makes it look like a WWE match.

@OUR GOVERNMENT SUCKS that's what I mean by putting in the work ahead of time. Edit: not that every actor who does a fight scene should need to master a martial art. It's just what separates great fight movies from average ones.

I love that he never feels like he wants to be great, he just seems to make the most of that gift to be a talented actor, filling the biggest possible bandwidth. And in 30years or so hes gonna look back at one of the most rich legacies of the industry.

@OneLuvJigga you seem to have this bizarre notion that movies can't ever be realistic as a rule because they're movies lol

@dash4800 yes, I have. And no, it's not. Real fights have punches that miss, punches that are blocked, clinching, etc. That would be confusing to watch for a normal viewer. Heck, even judges don't see the fights clearly, half of the time. And, don't even get me started on grappling lol 😆

@diazjordan54 JGL was in his mid 20s when they cast him as "Robin" , though. Besides, why cast an older actor when there are plenty of talented young ones around? I mean Carla Gugino have the perfect physique to be casted as comic book character (especially comic book superheroine/supervillain) but she is now to old to play a comic book lead ( shame, really).
