Well technically and it's been already proven if you can max out the power output the limit of the power of this thing is the actual power output and if the surrounding elements will handle it, since miniaturizing and maxing out the energy sources of a weapon have been a comon theme for humans since they discovered what technology can do for them, i'd say you're most probably right, terminators guns would most probably run with a railgun system running on nuclear fusion batteries or something.

@chiecken man No they can't. You give me 3 weapons that can swap their ammo for non-lethal rounds and still be very lethal with regular rounds. Some shotguns, maybe, but Railguns might start as a type of shotgun, but this technology will turn them into high accuracy rifles in the long run. Blunt disks become sharpened disks. Can be swapped for metal core disks with a softer outside. You can adjust the speed. Stack more ammo in magazines because you don't need gunpowder, only a battery. You tell me which weapons can do all of that, and not be outmatched quite fast by railgun tech.

Whether a weapon becomes majorly used will be a matter of efficiency and especially logistics. Provided that the ability to maintain charge and to recharge is simple, and the ammo is easy to produce and transport, then it stands a good chance of replacing current firearms.

Fun fact: The projectile does NOT need to be magnetic in a rail gun, just needs to be able to conduct electricity. Railgun physics is awesome! This might be a Gauss gun tho, not sure. Cool video!

    • Pythagorean teacher

      Pythagorean teacher

Why do you mention it wouldn't it have to be magnetic? (Just curious). Also this is nothing personal as I don't exzactly understand the fun fact trend entirely but for some reason saying 'fun fact' seems alot more 'disengenuine' then the statement 'fact'. In defensive behavioral science this closely mimics deception threw an expression more commonly known as dressing up a lie. It's one of the most basic forms of manipulation techniques.

    • Lou

      Lou

@Pythagorean teacher In the video, one of the guys said that the projectile must be magnetic, I was merely pointing out that it wasn't necessarily true (if its a rail gun). I am a physicist and I like discussing physics topics, albeit I never usually do so in comment sections. As to the comment about manipulation; very strange thing to suggest, and how its relevant at all to the "fun fact" I casually tossed in my comment eludes me. I guess I should ask, assuming its a form of manipulation, ... did it work? *wink*

    • Pythagorean teacher

      Pythagorean teacher

@Lou it's not strange it all to me. My profession is partly behavioural science. I just wanted to highlight it for you. I'm not at all accusing you of being disingenuous. I would need at least 10 minutes of a natural conversation to conclude. Most statements starting with fun fact are disingenuous. The terminology fun fact it's self usually referencing a small irrelevant factual information that's interesting. But people often use the expression as a tool for manipulation. No need to get defensive friend.

that's a coil gun. It uses coils of wire to create a magnetic field, draws a projectile into it, then turns off and turns on the next coil, accelerating the projectile. A rail gun is different. It uses 2 rails rather than coils. When the projectile touches both rails it creates an electro magnetic force that projects the "bullet". Its been a while so im not sure how the rail gun specifically works, but is different from a coil gun in the sense that it uses 2 rails rather than multiple stages of coils.

    • Nick

      Nick

      5 ай бұрын

@Mark Lucachev id imagine it makes a lot of heat, but not from friction. When the rail gun fires, its essentially shorting a high current power supply at the point of the bullet. The resistance of thee bullet along with the rails and all electronics downstream convert the electricity to heat.

Even though it may seem unimpressive to some now, it is only going to get better. This is one of the most primitive versions of this technology, and will the proper time, investment, and engineers it may become a real life version of the sci-fi weapon you imagine when you hear railgun

I think it’s more of a coil gun then a rail gun, it uses electromagnetic coils to push it through the barrel, where as a rail gun uses the principals of a homopolar motor, basically there are two rails and the projectile touch’s both and the electricity goes down one rail through the projectile and to the other and this makes an electromagnetic force that pushes it along the rail

@todd heaney What do you mean? He literally says "fuck the NFA, fuck the ATF" like all the time lol. The main sponsor for his channel is also Brownell's, which is one of the biggest firearms distributers and also one of the biggest 2A Advocate companies in the country. Either way, why do you think it's a requirement to talk about political topics when making gun videos? Some people just like to come and watch unadulterated destruction or see interesting and unique guns (this video is a perfect example) that most people don't have or have ever even seen. I myself, as I'm sure many others are, already well aware of anti gun arguments and the push for new anti gun laws. I go to other channels for that info and content (Colion Noir is a really good one for example). I go to Garand Thumb and Demo Ranch and KY Ballistics for fun content, not for politics

I kinda want there to be sharp blades on the edges if the disk (but keep the flat top & bottom so it's still accurate) and a component all the way in the back of the barrel that would first make it spin like a Beyblade and only then fire down the barrel.

Rough calculation in case anyone was curious; there is an 8 second interval between the shot being fired upward, and it coming back down. Back of the envelope calculation (g*t^2/8), gives us about 80 meters for the maximum height (or about 260 feet)

I wonder why they don't just have some kind of grips on one side of the square firing chamber (barrel?) which spins the projectiles like a frisbee as it accelerates. You'd definitely lose some velocity converting some linear to angular momentum, but the gains to stability would increase accuracy dramatically. Not to mention flipping over in flight like a coin toss would cause tons of drag, so keeping the projectile going through the air always edge first might also increase the overall range even if the muzzle velocity is lower.

One thing I find weird is that it wasn't made full rifle length. The longer the better. You could even load it all the way at the rear. I'm sure it would get damn heavy though. I wonder how it would work to fire them on a sled. The sled would work its way around internally much like the chain of a chainsaw and pick up the next bullet. This way you could use something bullet shaped and possibly ramp up the velocity.
